More on the MInoans: the Phaistos Disc

The Phaistos Disc is an artifact from Crete that dates to approximately 1700 BC. Although contemporary with Linear A script, the Phaistos Disc is in another Minoan script; one which the famous Minoan archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans called "hieroglyphic."
The disc was discovered in the North-East apartments of the Minoan Palace at Phaistos in Southern Crete.
There seem to be a number of competing 'decipherments' of the disc, by various people, some of which tie the script to Semitic languages and claim it is a list of commodities, others of which claim the disc is in very Ancient Greek and is a geometry proof regarding the paradox of parallel lines.
Due to recent discoveries, and research, however, the most plausible theory may be that one tying the disc to Linear B script, that is, ancient Hellenic language.
Links below provide some small sample of the various decipherment schemes.

It is interesting that the Massey twins do not mention Cyrus Gordon's Evidence for the Minion Language, Ventnor, N. J., Ventnor Publications, 1966, at all. While I doubt that very many accept much or all of Gordon's efforts, he was among the first, as far as I know to try to explain Minion Linear A and the Phaistos Disk as having been written in a Semitic language. His starting point was a consideration of the Eteocretan texts. He then turned to the Minion text HT 88 where he saw in the "total" line a virtual bilingual for what he took to be the Semitic root kl, written ku-ro, meaning all before the number 6. And went on from there.

The reason I bring all this up is that Gordon was an accomplished Semitists and it is hard to believe that Massey twins could have reached their conclusion without interacting with Gordon's attempts. It is interesting that they do cite Gordon's classic Ugaritic Textbook.

I haven't tried to come to terms with the Massey "decipherment" for several reasons. The most important is that I am no long up on the literature and a lot of literature has been produced on this subject. But the fact that they do not seem to interact with Gordon raises a very big red flag, as does their title and the private publication of the efforts.

I should note that Gordon didn't really attempt a complete decipherment of the Phaistos Disk, much less an interpretation. He did suggest a few readings. While I am at it, it is worth noting that the Masseys only mention the work on the Disk by Schwartz once and that of Ephron not at all but they do seem to accept many of these scholar's readings.

I'd like to clarify a couple points about my and my brother's Phaistos Disk (PD) work. Firstly, our decipherment attempt doesn't suggest that the PD is Semitic, rather that it is Indo-European. The lengthier pdf linked from our website tells a chronological story of our decipherment attempt in which we experiment with Semitic words, but unveil eventually Indo-European forms. We were aware of Cyrus Gordon's work, we actually had the great fortune of speaking personally with him about it at a Society of Biblical Languages Assembly in San Francisco where we presented our theory. He attended the event and afterwards congratulated our efforts. This is not to say that he agreed with or accepted them, not at all, rather he applauded the idea that people would still try to decipher the PD.
With regards to private publishing, we had an offer from a publisher to print a book of our theory at that same conference, but we chose to publish our work through our internet site for two reasons, one, to reach the widest possible audience and two, to retain ownership of the theory in every way. Our theory has become widely known and referenced, which I suspect would not have been the case if we had simply deposited the theory in some limited run printing of a book.

Geachte heer / mevrouw,

Dear Mr. / Mrs.,

I published a (free) website book about the “decipherment” of the Phaistos Disc. The Disc contains an ideographic script, indepen-dent of any language A book content has been attached to this mail. Please, have a quick look at the Website mentioned above.
